Documented paint labels Did some touch-up painting in all rooms. Small meal: leftover goulash, water. Inbox cleaning. Cut my hair, showered. Late afternoon meal: organic mac and cheese from a box with diced red onion, diced broccoli, solid white tuna from a can. Reviewed my Europe trip photos and began building a "best of" Flickr set so that people don't have to look through 2,200 photos to find the best ones. Organized music in playlists in iTunes. To bed late.

Slept in. Patrick baked cherry phyllo rolls. Brunch at home: veggie burger, 8 ounces of organic orange juice. Patrick and I drove from San Francisco to San Jose for a one-day, 85-degree getaway. We stayed at Hotel De Anza. Hotel De Anza is a very elegant hotel whose primary audience seems to be small-to-medium-sized event planners, those event attendees, and mid-to-higher-end business travelers. Our stay had some problems but the staff dealt with the issues reasonably well. Upon arrival by car we were a bit confused by the valet service. There was no one outside, so we parked, and immediately someone came out to receive us. Inside we checked in and showed ourselves to our room. Within a few minutes a maintenance person knocked and explained that someone had earlier reported that some of the lights in our room were not working. He did a quick check and confirmed the report. A few minutes later we were called by phone and asked if we wanted to stay in this room or be moved to another room. We had just arrived, so we didn't mind being moved to a room. We moved to another room—same corner of the building but one floor higher. Upon arrival we found the same lights problem existed in this room. We later learned this to be true for all the rooms in this corner of the building on all the floors. I volunteered us to wait in the lobby while they arranged a different room. Finally we were in. A different corner of the building. After we were settled in our room a few minutes, we realized we were confused about the breakfast that was included in the package we purchased. Monday (tomorrow) is Labor Day and a letter indicated that the restaurant serving the included breakfast would be closed. I inquired by telephone about this and was told that he thought the restaurant would be open for breakfast only but he would check. Later, by telephone I was told with apologies that the restaurant would not be open and instead we could obtain breakfast items at the Raid Our Pantry room and that our bill would be adjusted accordingly (less $30). The rest of our stay was fine—no other problems. We borrowed a DVD from their DVD library which seemed to be well curated and even included recent releases. Dinner with Patrick at Billy Berk's after finding Mezcal to be closed due to Labor Day weekend. On the way to dinner we noticed that we were walking distance to Splash, a nightclub that happened to be having a gay Latino night tonight. Billy Berk's serves excellent food in huge portions. Patrick ordered beer-battered fried chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and country gravy and a side of broiled asparagus, iced tea. I ordered beer-battered fish and chips with a side of roasted beets, peach fizz (non-alcoholic). Upon arrival, the asparagus seemed steamed rather than broiled. Everything was delicious except both Patrick and I found the beets too buttery-rich. We ate some of the beets but opted to not take any home. The chicken was essentially two very large breasts, perfectly cooked. The fish was 4 small log-shaped pieces. We couldn't eat everything and took home one of the chicken breasts and 2 of the fish logs. Too full for dessert. Our server was a Causcasian woman with a multicolor, short, spiky hairdo, and she reminded me of Pink. Back to the hotel. Nap. The night was warm with occasional warm breezes—nice. We walked to Club Papi at Splash, enjoying the very large spaces that gay bars usually don't have in San Francisco. Spent a few hours having a drink and dancing. We saw our server from the restaurant and said hello. Walked to the hotel. The Raid Our Pantry feature of this hotel is just what it sounds like. Between 10 PM and 5 AM they have a pantry with sweet and savory snacks and supplies for sandwiches and an assortment of beverages. If you're hungry you can help yourself to some food, so we did: sandwiches, coffee for Patrick, mint tisane for me.

Mon Sep 3, 2012

Breakfast items from the hotel pantry: cereal with milk, bagel and cream cheese, fruit salad, coffee. Watched Wall-E on DVD borrowed from the hotel front desk. Drove from San Jose to San Francisco. Grocery shopping at the new Whole Foods on Ocean Avenue. We forgot to use the $10 off coupon we received at the recent street food festival. Our experience at this new Whole Foods was excellent. Home. Lunch: leftover beer-battered fried chicken and fish. Patrick did laundry. Dinner with PDDR and Patrick at PDDR's. Danny is newly returned early from his cruise.

Bought a double caffe latte from the cafeteria. DPSL website meeting with Marcus F, Susie, and Eric. Did some work in Eric's office which included proofreading a very long IP address deny list. Communications team meeting with Susie, Eric, David, and Paula. Somehow Susie thought it was David's birthday today but it turned out to not be the case. She bought mini cupcakes and small food gifts for David. I forgot to take a mini cupcake before I left the building. I ate lunch during our meeting: avocado, jack, and tomato sandwich and fruit salad that I bought yesterday at Whole Foods but didn't take to Dolores Park. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Weight training: 8 flights of stairs taken 2 at a time. Archived backup data to portable hard drive. Supp app project work in Drupal: followup on reported problems. Edits for a poster for Cindy, followup with Judy F. Repaired config for PharmAdMIT for Joel. Showed Shirin how to create a PDF from multiple documents. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Cleaned a lot of broken links due to the new it.ucsf.edu website going live a few days ago. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Seniore's pizza delivery: medium veggie special, small garden salad with ranch dressing, hot water. Patrick made two desserts tonight and we tried a little of both. I also had some organic mint tisane. Continued building the best of Europe trip photo set on Flickr. Received by mail and ripped a new cd from Gaucho called Part-Time Sweetheart, a Kickstarter project that I supported. Archived photos from Dex's website since he said he was getting rid of them.

Sun Sep 9, 2012

Weight training: crunches, bicycles. Breakfast: small bowl of Grandma Goodie's super granola with organic lowfat milk. Archived receipts and documents from Europe trip. Uploaded photos of receipts to Flickr (private). Rode Muni to Powell Street station. Stopped at the Apple Store to pick up some small items for work. The worker automatically gave me the UCSF discount: 7%. Muni to Montgomery Street station. Met Nate and Jen at The Palace Hotel for sunday brunch in The Garden Room. Sunday brunch is pricey—$75. The food is great slightly more for the huge selection than the quality (which is high), but you're paying more for the experience than the food. Basically almost anything most Americans might want to eat for brunch is there. Afterwards Jen retrieved her car from the expensive "valet" parking and we parked in the Union Square garage. We visited Tout Sweet, Yugit Pura's patisserie which opened this weekend. (Too full to eat anything, of course.) Afterwards Jen gave Nate a lift to PDDR's. I did some shopping: Uniqlo pop-up store, Zara boys, Levi's, bought a few items at the first two. Interestingly, Uniqlo offered free, 1-hour hemming on the jeans I bought, but I declined when I learned they would not do an original hem. Got an iced tea from Marcela at Emporio Rulli and sat in Union Square watching a man have fun entertaining children and dogs with a remote-controlled racing car. Muni to Embarcadero station. Met Patrick who arrived by car, dropped purchases in the trunk. Dinner at Fuzio: angel hair with shrimp and calamari for Patrick, chinese chicken salad for me, Lagunitas pints for each. Wed Sep 12, 2012

Yoga: standing warmup practice. Breakfast: ginger-pecan granola with raspberries and organic, lowfat yogurt; 8 ounces of carrot juice; hot water. Finished minor edits for the Recharge website and pushed live: prices on massage page. Began reviewing work on the dev site for Recharge. Recently Patrick and I considered going to see The Book of Mormon, a musical comedy Broadway show on tour (and soon in San Francisco) by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, because friends of ours are going, but we decided against it after hearing that ticket prices are between $200 and $800. I wonder how they plan to use all that money. I don't mind that much that it provides a message with which I ultimately disagree (that it's okay to believe what you want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone)—from the reviews it appears to be hilarous, excellently executed entertainment—but that people are paying these prices is the biggest laugh of all. It's kind of like if you had the opportunity to pay $70 for a really good burrito would you do it? It's still just a burrito, and this is still just entertainment. I might see it later on stage if the prices become more reasonable. Rode Muni to work. Weight training: 8 flights of stairs taken 2 at a time. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Supp app project work in Drupal: followup on reported problems. Completed a portion of git setup. Calendar management and scheduling with John K and Eric. Supp app project work in Drupal: removed a space character in front of a last name for Joel. Followup with Shirin on today's content meeting. Patrick picked me up in the car. Visited Recharge Spa. Dinner at Ti PiacerĂ¡ with Patrick: bruschetta to share, chicken marsala and sangiovese for Patrick, fettucine with salmon and hot water for me, foccacia with roasted garlic dipping oil, tiramisu to share. Food was excellent, service was very good. A pleasant experience. Drove home. Unwrapped and amputagged recent Uniqlo purchases.

Thu Sep 13, 2012

Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Finalized orientation handout. Helped Joel with a question about PowerPoint and aspect ratios. Remotely watched portions of the IT Services meeting. Migrated content to the Communicators website. Posted updated schedules for Lucia. Web updates for Cindy: pathway declation calendar. Garage parking cost $24.50 for about 7 hours of parking. Drove to the Castro, found street parking surprisingly easily. Eye doctor appointment. Doc says I might need reading glasses soon but not yet. Patrick met me in the Castro. We ate dinner for the first time at Fork, which was in the space that Fuzio was. It's not full table service. Butternut squash ravioli for me, cajun pasta jambalaya with pappardelle for Patrick. We both tried the $4 drink special: rum and grapefruit juice. I didn't like the taste of the drink much, but it was strong for a $4 cocktail in the Castro. Afterwards we walked to Blackbird and met with Ray, Emery, and Bill C for drinks. A few hours later we joined them for dinner at Barracuda. Seafood ramen and crunch and munch roll for me and Patrick, ramen for Emery, ramen for Ray, tempura ramen for Bill.

Rode my bike around Berkeley a bit. Late afternoon snack at Herbivore: vegan chili cheese fries, thai iced tea. I had a problem with my order: the fries were all dried out, probably had been sitting around for a while. I reported the problem and the order was replaced with fresh fries. Drove home.
