Sun Apr 1, 2012

We tried to find someplace to eat for breakfast close to Chablis Inn but found nothing worthwhile nearby so we returned to Oxbow Public Market and ate at C CASA. Afterwards we walked historic downtown Napa along Riverfront until Napa Mill. Drove back to the hotel. Checked out of Chablis Inn. Drove back to San Francisco. On our way out of town we passed two bed-and-breakfasts that looked nice from the street: Beazley House and The Inn on First. The GPS routed us over the Bay Bridge, and Patrick did not like this route. He thought it had too many streetlights and more traffic. Lunch at Citrus Club on Haight Street: we shared fresh spring rolls with shrimp and chow mein noodles with vegetables and tofu. I tried on some clothes at American Apparel but the cut was not right, and I didn't buy anything. Grocery shopping at Whole Foods nearby. As before, parking was not much of a problem. A minute of waiting for a space to open in their lot. Home. Unpacked groceries and overnight bags. I did some vacuuming and paid bills. Our rent increases by $50 starting next month. I made hotel reservations for my forthcoming trip to Cologne. Edited and uploaded some photos to Flickr. Dinner at home with Patrick: steamed salmon with vegetables wrapped in cedar, leftover roasted fingerling potatoes, side salad with organic ranch dressing. Dessert: 2 girl scout thin mint cookies. Did some work on tax filings: prepared my explanatory notes. Cold almost all gone, still some congestion in the chest.

Mon Apr 2, 2012

Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh diced honeycrisp apple, cinnamon, California sage honey, organic soy milk. Rode Muni to work. Coded proposed computer requirements for fall. Posted spring schedules for Lucia. Updated graduation ceremony web pages for Cindy. Listserv management. Archived website data to portable hard drives. Chatted briefly with Rodney to give him some good news. Timesheet activities. Followup with SCWG about computer requirements. Lunch from the cafeteria: Eritrean food prepared by guest chefs from New Eritrea Restaurant and Bar. It was too spicy for me, but I ate it anyway. Listserv management. Maintenance for Sammie's computer. Rode Muni to Church Street. Dinner at Jake's on Market, our first time dining here, with Patrick, Danny, Drew, Romy, Phil. I had wild mushroom risotto. Patrick had fried chicken with a biscuit. Rode Muni home. Cold almost all gone, still some congestion in the chest.

Doctor appointment. Shuttle from Mount Zion to Parnassus. Snack: veggie pizza slice from the cafeteria. I realized after eating it that I don't like their pizza—the crust is wrong. Attempted to followup with Hilton Garden Inn Denver Downtown, which charged me the wrong rate for one of our rooms—no answer. Rode my bike home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers. I made myself a moscow mule light. Tried to do more tax filing work but was too tired. Cold almost all gone, still some congestion in the chest.

Wed Apr 4, 2012

Breakfast at home: organic plain lowfat yogurt with honey maple almond granola and fresh, sliced organic banana. Rode my bike to work. Today to avoid rough pavement at 19th and Irving, I decided to bike up Judah instead. This is a steep climb, but I was able to do it without a problem, and this was my first time doing so. Reported a problem with MSB elevator 4 seemingly stalled on floor 1. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Reported problems with the CP website to Lynn O. Management activities. Listserv management. Worked with Tran to troubleshoot a problem with PGP Desktop on Joel's computer. Turns out my admin account doesn't have an email address associated with it, so it cannot be used to admin PGP functions. Supp app work in Drupal: trying to resolve problems with Conditional Field, resolved problems with Node Limit Number. Chatted with Eric and Susie. Calendar management. Listserv management. Sent sitemaps and wireframes to web stakeholders. Attempted to followup with Hilton Garden Inn Denver Downtown, which charged me the wrong rate for one of our rooms, got a human, got transferred, then left a message. Listserv management. Calendar management. Late lunch to go from Panda Express: fried rice, honey walnut shrimp, mixed vegetables. My fortune: Elegant surroundings will soon be yours. Shuttle from Parnassus to Mount Zion. Doctor appointment. Shuttle from Mount Zion to Parnassus. Discovered my supp app folder on the network is missing. Submitted a request to DLS to restore data. Announced the new carrying case for the silver shared office laptop to staff. Made a small change to the network settings on Sammie's computer. Attempted to followup with Hilton Garden Inn Denver Downtown, which charged me the wrong rate for one of our rooms, got a human, explained how it has been difficult to resolve this problem, asked her to own my problem. She agreed and said someone would call me back. I asked when. She said today. Calendar management. Rode my bike home. Dinner at home with Patrick: quinoa fettucine with garden vegetables in marinara sauce, hot water. Charged my bike headlight. Uploaded a photo to Facebook. Completed my journal entry for March 31. Spent about 2 hours on tax filing work. Edited and uploaded photos to Flickr. Late meal: leftover frankenstein pasta. Cold almost all gone, still some congestion in the chest.

Lunch: a free emergency veggie burrito which I ate while waiting for the Lime shuttle with Eric. Lime shuttle from Parnassus to Mission Center Building. UCSF Drupal Users Group meeting. Lime shuttle from Mission Center Building to Parnassus. Asked Cindy to approve Joel's replacement monitors purchase. Followup with helpdesk about email address request from last week. Spent about 2 hours, completed one tax return, three more to go. Cold almost all gone, still some congestion in the chest.

Fri Apr 6, 2012

Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh diced pink lady apple, cinnamon, California sage honey, organic soy milk. Rode my bike to work. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Followup on email account order for Cindy. Ordered replacement monitors for Joel, was very surprised to find that CDWG via BearBuy had a better price than Amazon—usually it's the other way around. Ordered from CDWG via BearBuy. Followup with Tran about missing network folder—it was found inside a nearby folder! Hooray! Lunch by myself at Yummy Yummy, encountered Chris O who was also eating there with someone else. Fried egg noodles with tofu, pork, and vegetables; imperial rolls; hot tea. Supp app work in Drupal. ICRD work for Rodney. 1-on-1 with Eric D, worked on more wireframes review, he showed me how to check for Trojan-Downloader:OSX/Flashback.I (my mac pro was clean). Built a quick form to gather info from Cindy for posting graduation ceremony news. Rode my bike home. On the way I stopped at Everybody Bikes to get a small tune-up for my bike. Turns out my air pressure was much lower than it should have been, I had been riding with the handlebars extended more than they should have been (contrary to what I was told by a different bike shop when I originally purchased my bike), and my gear-changing cable was misaligned or misconfigured. Michael performed by tune-up, and after a short test ride I had decided it was one of the best tune-ups I've had with this bike. While I waited I chatted with a woman also in the shop who was clearly not a customer but also not clearly an employee. We talked about zodiacs (3 of the 5 of us in the shop were Scorpio and the other 2 were Aries). We talked about forgetting important dates like birthdays and anniversaries. She didn't know how to ride a bike, and that surprised me some. Dinner at home by myself: leftover pizza from Seniore's, hot water. Dessert: one cashew roca. Checked both home computers for Trojan-Downloader:OSX/Flashback.I—both clean. Picked up Patrick near West Portal because Muni wasn't working. He ate leftover pizza as well. Spent 2 hours, partially completed tax return #2. Cold almost all gone, still some congestion in the chest.

Sat Apr 7, 2012

Breakfast at home with Patrick: we split an almond pastry and a chocolate pastry, organic earl gray tea. Completed tax return 2 of 4. Lunch: leftovers from yesterday's lunch. Completed tax returns 3 and 4 of 4. Such a relief! Dinner at home with Patrick: ordered from South Sea Seafood Village (415-665-8210, 1420 Irving Street) via seamless.com: prawns with vermicelli clay pot (#703), steamed tofu stuffed veggies and bean curd (#804), pot stickers (#117), 2 orders of steamed rice (#920). Expected delivery time = 45 minutes. The order arrived surprisingly fast: 30 minutes. We were disappointed with the prawns and vermicelli clay pot because the prawns were overcooked to the point of mushiness, the prawns were extraordinarily difficult to eat if you didn't want to eat the shell, and the noodles were unappetizing because aside from the prawns and the sauce there was nothing else interesting in the dish. There were a lot of large prawns in this $14.50 dish, but we couldn't eat more than 4 of them. The shell stuck stubbornly to the prawn meat whereas usually in dishes like these there's some space between the meat and the shell that makes the shell easy to remove. We ended up throwing most of this dish away—a waste of money. Aside from not overcooking it and resolving the shell removal problem, this dish could also be improved by adding some vegetables like carrot, bok choy, and mushrooms. We surmised that the same dish in a dine-in situation might be better. Perhaps the prawns continued cooking in the closed container during delivery. (But then a good chef ought to take that into account when preparing it, right?) The steamed tofu stuffed veggies and bean curd dish was also disappointing because it was so blandly flavored. The shrimp "stuffing" sat on top of the bean curd, not stuffed inside (misleading title), and neither the shrimp nor the bean curd was marinated. There was a light, clear sauce to the dish, but this dish needs a heavier or saltier sauce to balance the non-flavor of the bean curd. The person with whom I dined thought the vegetables in this dish were slightly overcooked, losing a bit of their crispness, but I found them to be alright. The potstickers were very tasty. Each one is rather large with a generous portion of filling. When we finished our meal, we were prepared to find the same fortune cookies that seemingly every other Chinese restaurant delivery includes. (Boring!) To our pleasant surprise, we instead found a complimentary cookie assortment that was very fresh and baked perfectly. One was an almond cookie, and the other was similar to a Mexican wedding cookie but fluorescent yellow and with a candied walnut in the center. There were a handful of these small cookies in our order, and they were a delightful, atypical curtsey to a mostly disappointing meal. The cookies had perfect crispness and interesting flavors and textures. South Sea Seafood Village has a few good things going for it and could improve significantly with only a few changes. Unfortunately, we might not stick with them long enough to find out. Total = $37.43 before a 10% tip for the delivery person. Spent some time on geni.com adding info. Late meal: organic vegetable soup from a can.

I got a tuna salad sandwich on sesame with potato salad. Patrick got a pastrami and swiss sandwich on plain with cole slaw. Laundry: folding. Prepared for guests. Returned to Everybody Bikes, exchanged the small hand pump they sold me on Friday for a floor pump. I needed the gauge because I don't know what 80 psi is with a hand pump. Picked up ice and toilet paper at Andronico's. Home. Prepared for guests. Small dinner party: Patrick prepared over yesterday and today red bean soup; jambalaya with chicken, andouille sausage, and shrimp; creole potato salad; chocolate bread pudding; baguette slices with cheese (Sèvre et Belle boucherondin). I helped by cleaning. Jane, Patricia, Danny, Drew, Romy, Phil, Galen, Jonathan, Steve, Dong-yi, Quyen, Dave. Cleanup. Visited my Google Plus page for the first time in months (again). Edited a photo, sent copies to Emery and Andy. They added "Hot on Google" I guess because lots of people had no interesting content to view. I couldn't figure out how to stop seeing Hot on Google, but it doesn't matter. I hardly ever use Google Plus.

Hanauma Bay snorkeling with Bev, Celine, and Kellan. The weather was unusually windy, and not long after we arrived the tide came in, reducing underwater visibility. Left Bacchus, and on the walk back to Wyndham I stopped to watch buskers River (14) and Tiger (11). River played the piano and sang, River sang backup. So talented! I gave them $20.

Fri Apr 27, 2012

I dreamt last night that a Space Shuttle crashed into a home in which I was occupied. It wasn't my current home. I was looking almost directly at it when it happened, so from my perspective it was coming almost straight toward me. When the nose hit the sliding glass door of the home through which I was seeing its approach, it behaved and made a sound like a small bird hitting the glass, and it bounced back some distance. There was no damage to the building. I ran outside not believing what I saw, but I indeed saw a Space Shuttle in the street. It seemed huge. Shortly thereafter I realized it—or possibly some other very large vehicle (I can't recall exactly now)—was still moving—directly toward me. I felt as though I was in danger and started running, and it continued to follow. Looking over my shoulder I realized it was catching up. That's when I woke up. Breakfast at home: lowfat plain yogurt with honey maple almond granola and raisins. Writing this entry several days later and can't remember how I got to work. Calendar management. I deleted our simple checkout configurations and also deleted old copies of the PID folders that existed because of longstanding change requests that were open for preview. Drove to the Castro. Churchill with many from the Syndicate. Met kevin (backend of apple.com), tim (iphoto), pete, kevin, greg, tom.
