Sun Jan 8, 2012

Breakfast at home: Bob's Red Mill oat bran hot cereal with fresh, sliced banana; cinnamon; California sage honey. Medicinal tisane. Caught up on journaling. Accidentally discovered a keyboard shortcut for Mac OS X (10.6.8) that I had never seen documented before: Open at least 3 applications. In one of those applications, open multiple documents (e.g., when I discovered this I was using TextWrangler). Press and hold the Command key while tapping the Tab key. The application switcher appears in the center of the screen. Each time you press the Tab key, the indicator switches applications. When the indicator is on the application that has multiple windows open, and while keeping the Command key held down, press and release the 1 key. The display changes to show tiled thumbnails of all the windows open in that application. You can then release the Command key and use the arrow keys to select one of the documents, and pressing Enter changes focus to that document. You can also begin typing the name of one of the documents and the focus will change to that document—except this did not work for me in the case of a document called 01.xml, and I don't know why. This thumbnails display is essentially the same as the feature in Expose called "All windows" except that with this shortcut that application doesn't need to have the current focus—you have access to it from any application and, if you have multiple Spaces, from any Space. I then learned from a Google search that resulted in a YouTube video that Command+DownArrow and Command+UpArrow invoke the same thumbnails display. And in experimenting, I found that pressing the H key (before pressing-and-releasing the 1 key) toggles the hiding in the Dock of minimized windows, but I'm not sure how useful that really is. Unloaded pix from iPhone. Folded laundry. Lunch: macaroni and cheese with Dorot cilantro and fresh, diced tomato. Cut my hair, showered. Dinner at home with Patrick: homemade curry with tofu and vegetables, naan, water. Watched Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. I am surprised that I still have a largeish bruise on my left thigh from when Buddy the dog bumped into me almost a week ago on the catamaran. Buddy had been panicking from something unknown, and in his panic his head hit my thigh. It hurt instantly and for a few minutes after, but not badly, and I haven't really thought about it since that day.

The car windshield still wasn't as clean as I wanted it, so I cleaned it again today. Later after someone bumped into me and I bumped into Dewey causing him to spill his drink, I offered to replace his drink. A small cranberry and vodka costs $9 before $1 tip—expensive, I thought. This was a terrible episode. Avoid at all costs.

Wed Jan 18, 2012

Woke too early from coughing. Troubleshot a problem in OS 10.6.8 in which error "cannot allocate memory" or "resource busy" appeared in Disk Utility while attempting to format a working external hard drive. To resolve "resource busy" I remounted the drive. To resolve "cannot allocate memory" the solution suggested by kisuke3 at 5:02 PM on Sep 8, 2009 worked: select "zero out erase" before formatting. More external hard drive work. Telecommute day. Followup with student MA about the conferences page. Reported a problem logging into the new Honors and Awards database in Salesforce. I wasn't able to finish my workday today because of cold symptoms. I think I skipped dinner because of the cold symptoms.

Thu Jan 19, 2012

Home, sick. Breakfast: 2 slices of toast with butter, 2 eggs. Rested. Lunch: Patrick picked up vegetable pad see yew from King of Thai Noodle for me. Dessert 2: chocolate-bourbon bread pudding. Today we have a new Intelliseat for our toilet.

Fri Jan 20, 2012

Home, sick. Breakfast: 3 slices of toast with butter, 2 eggs. Rested. Very late lunch: tuna mac and cheese with red onion, hot water. Began, again, decrypting my iMac hard drive in anticipation of installing Lion. Helped Patrick install Lion then resolve problems with his calendars. The Intelliseat has been working well. I forgot what we had for dinner tonight.

Sat Jan 21, 2012

Home, sick. Decrypt was successful. Investigated the Lion upgrade process. My iMac has PGP 10.1.1 Build 10. It's not clear to me from Symantec's instructions whether PGP Desktop needs to be completely removed from my computer or if having the latest version installed is okay when I do the Lion upgrade. It says: "Note: If you are upgrading your computer to a new major release of Mac OS X (such as from 10.5.x to 10.6.x) and want to use this version of PGP Desktop, be sure to uninstall any previous versions of PGP Desktop before upgrading to the new version of Mac OS X and installing this release. Be sure to back up your keys and keyrings before uninstalling. Note that if you have used PGP Whole Disk Encryption, you will need to unencrypt your disk before you can uninstall PGP Desktop." The unclear part is: "...be sure to uninstall any previous versions of PGP Desktop..."—previous to what version? I could interpret this to mean previous to the current version, but this doesn't make sense because how can you have two versions of PGP Desktop installed? It also wasn't clear to me that I needed to decrypt all my drives—not just my startup drive. I submitted a ticket to our help desk: [I'm about to install Lion on my iMac which has PGP and WDE. In Symantec's instructions for the latest version of PGP, it says, "Note: If you are upgrading your computer to a new major release of Mac OS X (such as from 10.5.x to 10.6.x) and want to use this version of PGP Desktop, be sure to uninstall any previous versions of PGP Desktop before upgrading to the new version of Mac OS X and installing this release." Do I install the latest version of PGP and leave that installed before doing my Lion upgrade? Or must I uninstall PGP Desktop completely before doing my Lion upgrade? The way they have worded it doesn't make sense. If I have installed the latest version, how could I still have previous versions installed? How do I tell if I have previous versions installed? When they say "previous versions"—previous to *what version*? Another question: I know I need to decrypt my startup volume, but do external drives need to be decrypted in order to upgrade to Lion? PGP Desktop gave me a warning about still-encrypted drives when I tried to uninstall it. Is this warning ignorable in this situation?] Lunch at home with Patrick: tofu and vegetables stir-fry with noodles in teriyaki sauce, hot water. Nap. Cut my hair, showered. Dinner at Chevy's Stonestown with Patrick. Grocery shopping with Patrick: Trader Joe's Stonestown. Patrick made red beans. Finally watched Sicko (2007) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Edited a new news story late.

Fri Jan 27, 2012

I dreamt last night that it was lateish one night and I replied yes to a Syndicate dim sum event that pachooey had organized that was taking place the following morning. I slept. I awoke and realized that I had woken at 11:00 AM—exactly the time the event was scheduled to begin. I knew I couldn't get dressed and down to Chinatown quickly enough to not be embarrassingly late, so I realized that I should immediately cancel and send my regrets. A few moments later I awoke again, and it was just before 6:30 AM on a work day. I was confused for a few moments, first wondering why dim sum had been scheduled on a work day morning, and then realizing that the dim sum event was a dream, and then realizing that the dim sum event was a dream within a dream. To work. Management activities. Calendar management. pcard paperwork. Helped Lucia and James with a question about our Meridian telephones. Sent Shirin a proposed draft of the redesigned prospective students section and talked a bit about voice and tone of writing. Lunch from Panda Express. My fortune: Good fortune lies ahead. ICRD work for Cindy (APEX). Notified Susie about a downed website. Followup with student YN about a legal name change. Listserv management. The downed website is back up now. Designed and coded the 2012-2013 academic calendar in InDesign and for the web. Physical security work. Doctor appointment. Shopped in the Castro a bit. Encountered Ammon C and chatted for a bit. Dinner at Catch with Romy, Danny, Drew, Phil, and Patrick.

Sat Jan 28, 2012

Weight training: door pull-ups, towel curls, ledge curls. Still haven't quite got the hang of ledge curls yet but in theory it makes sense. Laundry. Breakfast at home: hash browns, vegetable patty, 2 eggs over easy. Web work for Drew. Lunch: leftovers from Catch. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: Patrick's homemade vegetable soup, hot water. Tilman's going away (aka Zieh Dich aus!) at Marck and Tilman's. New people I met: Kent, Tony, Brian. Emergency late meal at McDonald's #7413 (345 Bayshore Blvd) drive-thru: meal #11: filet-o-fish, fries, Dr. Pepper, which was simultaneously satisfying and regrettable. When did they stop putting lettuce in filet-o-fish? Space 550: disappointing because there were only about 200 people there. Shawn P played his first gig of this kind. I particularly liked the underwear song followed by the nasty boy song. The rest was house, deep house, and anthems. Met Saul, Jimmy, and Tony. Chatted with Danny.

Sun Jan 29, 2012

Breakfast at home: leftover vegetable soup. Laundry. Patrick and I ran some errands. Dropped my old Dell widescreen monitor at work. I hadn't been using it at home and might be able to use it as an extra monitor at work. Light lunch at Whole Foods (Haight): spinach orzo salad, tuna salad sandwich on croissant, bottled organic teas. Grocery shopping at Whole Foods (Haight). We got everything we wanted and spent only about $100. Patrick has been telling me that their 365 line of organic foods is a really great value, and after shopping today I have to agree. Staff was numerous and friendly. Customers seem fitter, healthier, and more attractive than other groceries at which we shop. Parking wasn't a problem. We circled the block once and on the 2nd attempt at entering the parking lot, we got a space after only 2 minutes. Folded laundry. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: steamed broccolini, soy noodles, water. Watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Stove-cooked popcorn with butter and garlic powder. I had hoped for this film to be smarter than it turned out to be. It was entertaining, but the plot was unbelievably and unnecessarily absurd in a handful of places. The film kinda said, "Here's some crazy stuff that happened," and it failed to provide much insight as to what had happened.
