Tue Nov 1, 2011

Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, sliced banana; california sage honey, soy milk. Rode my bike to work. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Supp app project work in Drupal. Chatted with Michael and Eric about Drupal. Supp app project work in Drupal. Calendar management. Listserv management. QBC work in Drupal. Small web edit for Shirin: infoday. Late lunch from the cafeteria: large vegetable soup, medium dinner roll with butter, water. Supp app project work in Drupal. The fillpdf service was down today from about 12:00 noon Pacific to about 3:00 PM Pacific. I sent Kevin K a direct tweet saying I thought the service was down. Within perhaps 10 minutes it was back up. QBC work in Drupal. Small web edit for Cindy: HSPR requirements. Rode my bike home, stopping at Everybody Bikes to buy a new headlight: USL-5 Raider USB rechargeable. I had to buy a new headlight because the bracket for the Giant Numen HL2.0 I had before broke when my bike fell over accidentally when I was not riding it. The Numen light assembly still works—only the bracket is broken, and I don't think I'll be able to get a replacement for just the bracket, but maybe I'll try. Home. Installed the new headlight and did a repair. The repair was another light issue. My taillight had fallen off. A while back Everybody Bikes had installed this for me using an L bracket. It worked fine for many weeks. The only problem was that the metal was perhaps softer than it should have been and every now and then the light would sag so I would push it back up. A while passed and it would sag. I would push it up again. And so forth until one day it just broke off at the bend in the L. Fortunately it happened when I was not riding, so I still had the taillight. I fixed this problem by swapping the positions of my tail reflector and my taillight. Patrick and I ordered a veggie deluxe pizza delivery, had that with Layer Cake shiraz 2010. Worked on Tina's website on a staging server, building it to be responsive, Ethan-Marcotte-style. I love media queries! It's painstaking, probably underappreciated work, but it's nice having so much more control than in the past. A helpful web developer tip: when resizing my browser window small to simulate an iPhone screen size, the contents of the window would force a horizontal scrollbar to appear. I hid content with stylesheets, and I removed content from the page, but nothing I did could make the horizontal scrollbar disappear. Until I turned off all my toolbars in Firefox.

Wed Nov 2, 2011

I worked around the problem by turning on Caffeine.

Thu Nov 3, 2011

Fri Nov 4, 2011

Signed up for Pantheon aka getpantheon.com (I think still in beta) using a keycode I received at the recent BADcamp. Found a fortune in my pocket today: You are often unaware of the effect you have on others. Rode my bike to work. Lots of QBC work in Drupal. Initial review form work with Joel. We decide we need to do a Microsoft Word version instead of PDF because we aren't sure if reviewers have Acrobat Pro. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Rode my bike home. I don't recall any of my meals today.

Sat Nov 5, 2011

Slept in. Breakfast at home with Patrick: herbed biscuits with fig jam, vegan sausage, salt-and-pepper scrambled eggs, earl gray hot tea. Business card work for Drew. Special: Initial review form work for Joel. Cut my hair. Early dinner at home by myself: leftovers. Nap. Dancing at Underground SF with Patrick. Met a (former) DJ named Topanga.

Sun Nov 6, 2011

Slept in. Breakfast at home with Patrick: almond pancakes, Ritual La Folie in the coffee style of Patrick. Special: Initial review form work for Joel pretty much all day. Reset my CrashPlan backup which had lost its connection. Repositioned my Cateye bike computer on my bike handlebars. The computer has been working inconsistently. Sometimes it would recognize the transmitter and receive data and sometimes it wouldn't. After rereading the installation instructions, I realized that perhaps the installation location was at fault. When I bought my bike I had the bike shop install the computer, and the technician did the installation on the left side of the handlebars but the transmitter was placed on the right side of the bike's front wheel. I moved the transmitter to the right side and we'll see how it goes. Edits for Patrick's website. Dinner at home: leftovers.

Mon Nov 7, 2011

Late snack: tortilla chips and guacamole.

Tue Nov 8, 2011

Voted. Rode my bike to work. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Our QBC websites launched today, and I spent a lot of the day following up on postlive tasks: linkchecking, updating the A to Z list, etc. Followup with Karl M and Darius M about server access. Answered a question from Mike W and Sherilyn V about YouTube. Listserv management. Eric and I chatted with Rodney about the Mac Mini security cages he recently installed. Purchased equipment. Lunch from the cafeteria: cream of mushroom soup, garlic fries with ketchup, water. Chatted with Sammie about zip files. 1-on-1 with Cindy. Help desk meeting. Posted draft schedules for Lucia. Tried installing display rotation software for Lisa's computer, but it resulted in BSOD, so I undid the changes and now everything is back to normal. Installed updates for my Mac Pro. Rode Muni home. Snack from Panda Express: veggie spring rolls. My fortune: You will always be surrounded by true friends. Dinner at home with Patrick: steamed veggie dumplings with dipping sauce. Finished watching Captain America (2011) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Facetimed with Tina. Troubleshot the problem in which Patrick's computer failed to back up with CrashPlan Central for the past 5 days. Restarting the CrashPlan engine did not work. Restarting his computer did not work. Checked his firewall—CrashPlan is already allowed. Restarting the Airport Express did not work.

Wed Nov 9, 2011

Reviewed ITS policy and procedure for Apple devices and iCloud. Worked late. Dinner at home by myself: leftover noodles. Downloaded and began listening to Matt Alber's Constant Crows (pre-order).

Thu Nov 10, 2011

Breakfast at home: 2 eggs over easy, 2 hash browns, toast with butter. Rode Muni to work. Management activities. Office celebration. Troubleshot poor display quality in S-158 for Joel and Sammie. My conclusion: we cannot get anything better than what they saw with the current hardware (NEC 4610). Redirected a request from student BP. Reposted a schedule for Lucia. Issued new two new Apple iPad 2 devices to Cindy and Shirin. Minor web updates: office staff listing, grads calendar. Posted a new news story for Susie. Supp app project work in Drupal: dentistry import. Completed paperwork for the iPads purchase. Database synching. Lunch at the cafeteria: pesto gnocchi, boiled carrots, breadstick with marinara. It was so much food I couldn't finish it. Dinner at El Mansour with Patrick, Danny, Drew, Romy, Phil, Anh.

Fri Nov 11, 2011

Tried checking in online with Virgin America but failed. They are switching to a new reservation system and have been encountering some problems. Washed dishes, threw out food that won't survive the next 3 days, showered, and finished packing. We were running short on time, so we abandoned our plan to take Muni then BART and instead rode Uber to SFO with Patrick, our first time using Uber. Our driver was Ken. Rain. It was fast, friendly, safe—an excellent experience ($65). I checked in with Virgin America. No problems, staff was friendly and efficient. Starbucks: I used my free birthday drink coupon to get a grande pumpkin spice latte. Relaxed in designer chairs in Virgin's lobby.

Sat Nov 12, 2011

Walked to Paris. Ate at Bellagio's Palio Cafe. Met with Tina at Snacks. Back to Vdara. Walked to Caesar's Palace. Coffee. Hotel room. Nap while Patrick takes a bath. Market Cafe: plain bagel with cream cheese, jasmine green tea. Read from Polyamory: The New Love Without Limits, a book that I borrowed from Drew. Back to the room. We review our dinner options: we needed something relatively quick on a Saturday night and since most restaurants would be packed at 7:30 PM we decided to do room service dinner for 4: popcorn shrimp wraps, tuna tartare nicoise salad, four-cheese pizza with mushrooms and red onions, ramen noodles, silk road cobb salad with blue cheese. Delivery time estimate: 35 minutes. Actual: about 30 minutes. $80 subtotal, $6.48 tax. I tipped $5. Cab to New York New York Hotel.

Sun Nov 13, 2011

Breakfast with Patrick at Cafe Vettro in Aria (702-590-7111): 2 large coffees; omelette with spinach, tomato, and provolone for me; 3 eggs over easy for Patrick. Afterwards we bought 2 large double americanos. Back to the hotel, delivered the coffee to Tina and Matt. Back to our room for a bit. Checked out, watched Tina and Matt pack their bags then the car. We left our stuff in Tina's car, and she self-parked in the Aria garage. We all took a cab to the Wynn and walked around, seeing the parasols, waterfalls, and the gardeny walk with mirror things. Back to Aria, picked up our bags, said goodbye. Taxi to the airport. Patrick and I took our separate flights from Las Vegas to San Francisco. I had an in-flight protein meal: $7. Taxi home, about $45. Throughout my Las Vegas trip I had difficulty connecting to the internet via AT&T and Vdara's free hotel internet. Sometimes disconnecting from the hotel wireless would suddenly make things work. Dinner at home with Patrick: steamed shrimp dumplings and veggie dumplings from Kingdom of Dumplings from frozen. CrashPlan finally seems to be working again for Patrick's computer. I still don't know exactly how I fixed it. I think it was adjusting ports in Airport Utility.

Mon Nov 14, 2011

Rode Muni to work. Breakfast burrito from Carmelina's. Database synching from Thursday had failed. Will tshoot later. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Fixed a problem with the placement interviews registration for Lisa. Alerted the Communicators group to Google Think Insights. Management activities. Chatted with Joel and Cindy about selecting hire date anniversary gifts. Lunch: leftovers from a meeting that someone else had: mushroom pizza slice, salad with ranch dressing. Checked with Lucia about photo releases. Sent Sarah M a query about PGP. The readme file in the latest build doesn't say 10.2 MP2 so I wasn't sure it was the correct build. She said that when PGP updates the build they don't always update the readme and that it is the correct build. Ordered a new graphics card for Eric. Minor edits to Joel's blog. Resolved broken search engine links on our sites, then notified web workers to do the same. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick, Drew, Romy, and Phil: Popeye's fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, red beans and rice. Dessert: leftover cookies and brownies and fruit tart from work.

Tue Nov 15, 2011

Woke with a sore throat, called in sick but still attended a 2-hour Gallup staff survey results meeting by telephone. Lunch: leftovers. Archived documents. Dinner: delivery from Ninki: deluxe veg yakisoba, winter wonderland, rock n roll, veg roll, ebi nigiri, free california roll. After we paid the deliverator we discovered that the free california roll was not included, but I didn't complain about it. Dessert: leftover cookies. Updated Patrick's website (Views). Examined new work requests for Recharge Spa.

Thu Nov 17, 2011

This morning while investigating downtime issues I learned that my web hosting company Bluehost is based in Provo, Utah, and this made me very sad. Rode Muni to work. Breakfast to go from Palio: scrambled egg and cheese bagel. Declined a request for new project work from Sarah S. Redirected a request from Todd L about the robotic pharmacy to Lynn P. Sammie started using her dual monitors today. I tried to help her resolve a fuzziness problem with one of the monitors. Upon investigation, I found: (a) both monitors were hooked up via VGA rather than DVI, (b) one monitor was still using the motherboard graphics card (the new graphics card is supposed to be able to handle 2 monitors with a DVI splitter, and I had forgotten to ask Tran to specifically set it up this way), and (c) the Samsung 204B monitor driver had not been installed (this was the monitor that was fuzzy). I tried resolving these issues but ended up making things worse while being late for the conference call I had scheduled with Susie and Eric. Web team conference call: mostly QBC followup. Sent a QBC status report to the wider project team. Calendar management: QBC followup. Made a minor edit to the initial review form for Joel. ICRD work. Fast and very late lunch to go from Subway: veggie delight. Sent a linkcheck report to the QBC project team. Followup with Tony T about the A to Z list and QBC project entries. QBC cleanup: CSS work. Maintenance for Sammie's and Joel's computers. Rode my bike home. I didn't know it was raining until I was downstairs with my bike. I had checked out the window before I left, but from my floor and with everything dark it seemed like there was no rain. Truly, though, it was more of a heavy mist than even a light rain, and it wasn't as cold as it can get in San Francisco, so I rode home even though I didn't prefer it. Nothing bad happened, though a car turning at 20th and Quintara did seem to come right at me but ended up not hitting me and there were the usual, annoying cars that speed up while passing a bicyclist. I haven't ever had a completely peaceful commute; there's always some driver making me feel threatened. I didn't even tell you about the time I was riding alongside the N-Judah one morning and a speeding car squoze between me and the train and passed while accelerating even faster in order to get ahead of the train. Must have been going 35 or 40 miles per hour. So unnecessary. The car came close to brushing me but didn't. The Muni driver saw me, and we shared a look of dismay, but there was nothing either of us could do to bring justice to the situation as seconds later the offender was gone. Dinner at home with Patrick: spaghetti with marinara sauce. Dessert: a small brownie. Watched True Grit (2010) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. I loved this film. A tale so lovingly, perfectly told with solid performances throughout. Surprisingly amusing for a tale of retribution. Late snack: leftover sushi, leftover corn off the cob.

Fri Nov 18, 2011

Breakfast at home: 2 hash browns, 2 eggs over easy. Met Danny at Union Square. We helped build LEGO Yoda Santa, ate at Amoura in the Westfield Centre food court, did some shopping. Home. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: shrimp and vegetarian tacos, water. During dinner we listened to Mariachi Fiesta Mexicana Radio on Pandora. Tried changing the battery on my Apple Remote and failed multiple times. I would press and the bottom part would go in a little but not open. I tried putting tape on the end and pulling thinking the mechanism inside to pop it out was broken, but that didn't work. After finding a video on YouTube showing the procedure I realized I was using too large of an object. What finally worked for me was the non-pointed end of a bamboo skewer. Keywords: troubleshooting, trouble, doesn't pop out, doesn't open, won't open. Danced at Fresh at Ruby Skye. Met or encountered Ray, Jeremy, Brad, Ric, Mike F, Cody, Phiam, Scott, Joseph, Rob, Johnny, Rob, Russ, Rudy, (Mike, Kenny, Henry), (Ryan, Mason), and many others.
