Tue Feb 1, 2011

Dinner at home: leftovers. Started the French language course in LiveMocha, which provides online language instruction. Via Groupon I bought 1 month each for French, Spanish, German, and Italian. Got through about 3 lessons. It's really slick. Then I encountered a problem in which I was unable to select options in Flash Player settings in order to record the role play portion. This led me to the thread called "Unable To Click in Flash Player Settings Box" that ScotianBoy started at Feb 15, 2010 9:56 PM. Ugh. The solution proposed by micah231 did not work. The solution proposed by eidnolb did not work. Dirty reinstalling did not work. Clean reinstalling did not work. Visiting the page found by searching Google on "Website Privacy Settings panel" and changing the settings appropriately did work. Specifically, on tab 5 (Website Privacy Settings) set Always Allow for www.livemocha.com and static.userplane.com. Then on tab 7 (Peer Assisted Networking Settings) do the same thing. Edited and uploaded photos. About 323 uploaded, about 580 to go. Added 2 journal entries from the Asia trip (December 21 and 22). Late meal: veggie burger. Snack: seaweed.

Sun Feb 6, 2011

Slept in. Breakfast at home: organic plain yogurt with Mad River Farms dune preserves, fresh sliced organic banana, apple-cinnamon granola; 12 ounces of nonfat milk. Cut my hair, showered. The morning forecast for today was 70 degrees, so I decided to ride my bike somewhere new. Finally got around to planting paperwhites, a Christmas gift from Cindy. Drove to REI, bought a bell and a helmet-mount rear view mirror. Drove to Chris and Nate's old place on Townsend, parked the car, pulled the bike out of the trunk. Rode to Mission Bay, ate lunch in the sun: "turkey" sandwich, tortilla chips, water. Rode to 3rd and Mariposa, then along Bay Front Park to China Basin Park, crossed the 3rd Street Bridge, then continued behind AT&T Park and along the Embarcadero up to Green Street. Turned around, rode back to the car mostly along the same route—a nice ride. Drove the car to Dolores Park, sat in the warm shade for about an hour, ate another "turkey" sandwich, tortilla chips, water. Changed from khaki shorts to long pants (grey cords) in the car. Drove to the Castro, bought toiletries at Walgreens, browsed at A Different Light Bookstore and bought 2 books. Danced a bit at Badlands. Drove to Danny, Romy, Drew, and Phil's. Walked to Tartine, picked up a small devil's food cake. Dinner at their place: mostly veggie dishes with rice. Dessert: the cake, tea. Afterwards they requested a slideshow of my Asia trip photos I have uploaded so far. Drove to the Castro. Stopped at Badlands. They were playing 80s tunes but the dance floor was too crowded and stuffy. I went to Trigger, danced a bit to hip hop. I went to The CafĂ©, danced to Sir Mix A Lot's "Baby Got Back." Home. Shower. I learn from David H's photos on Flickr that the afternoon forecast at 2:12 PM turned out to be 77 degrees. I picked a good day to ride my bike—sweet!

Sat Feb 12, 2011

Breakfast burrito with beans, leftover hash brown casserole, scrambled eggs; side of fresh sliced banana with diced mint and California sage honey. Installed Alfred 0.8.1. Looked sthrough some of Victor C's photos on Picasa. Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.4.2 on Mac OS 10.6.5 now asks for admin password at every launch when it did not before. Why?! :-( Console shows: "kCGErrorIllegalArgument: _CGSFindSharedWindow: WID -1. kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged. kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSOrderWindowListWithGroups: invalid window ID (-1). kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSOrderWindowList: NULL list pointer or empty list". I repaired disk permissions; that did not work. I restarted the Mac; that did not work. I tried a solution found on ithink.ch/blog in which you delete a key called selfhealingfilename in SHinit.xml but that did not work; Acrobat simply failed to launch. Entered my journal entry for December 24. Late afternoon meal: burrito similar to this morning. Edited and uploaded Asia trip photos. Will came over for dinner: veggie burgers. I napped. Dancing at GAMeBoi at Glas Kat with Will. Met or encountered Ryan, Jason, Kevin, Ric, Brad, Antuan, Tim, John, more.

Sun Feb 13, 2011

Breakfast at home: leftover hash brown casserole with 2 slices of toast, orange juice mixed with water. More helping Aggie set up her new computer. She served me a pizza slice from Arizmendi - yum! Grocery shopping at Safeway on Taraval. Dinner at home: leftover hash brown casserole, 8 ounces of generic V8 with freshly ground pepper. Dessert: one cashew roca. Watched Harry Connick, Jr. "Only You: Live from Toronto"—loved it. Entered my journal entry for December 25. Resumed the restoration of lost data on my hard drive of Flickr photos (see December 14, 2008). Edited an old photo of Chris to create a new composite, sent it to him for review. Snack: caster sugar organic hot chocolate with Bailey's, almond-anise biscotti. This is the first eating experience I can remember in which I enjoyed the flavor of anise. The upstairs neighbors have been smoking cigarettes again. It comes through the shared central heating duct and fills my apartment with the stinky smell. Today I found an old photo in my collection from 2006 in which I'm attending a birthday party for Travis on February 26, 2006, at Bryan L's place, and Will is in one of the photos. (See also January 12, 2011.)

Mon Feb 14, 2011

Weight training: door pull ups, pec crawl. Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced green apple; cinnamon; nonfat milk. Rain today. Rode the bus to work. Received valentine's day candy from student HC—thanks! Supp app project work in Drupal all day. To make Drupal redirect upon login, I used Login Destination. Login Destination has a conflict with Content Profile, so I applied the patch found at http://drupal.org/ node/ 761254#comment-3853352 and this worked for me. I had tried LoginToboggan but that did not work for me—I got a blank page. Lunch: shrimp quesadilla from Carmelina's, water. Worked a little late. Rode the bus home. Dinner at home: veggie burger with Tillamook cheddar, organic greens, ketchup, and miso mayo. Snack: sweet potato fries, one navel orange. Edited and uploaded Asia trip photos to Flickr. Weight training: door pull ups.

Tue Feb 15, 2011

Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced green apple; raisins; cinnamon; California sage honey; nonfat milk. Rain today. Rode the bus to work. SCWG meeting. Data transfer for student AB. Linkchecking. Supp app project work in Drupal. Lunch: free caesar salad with croutons and cheese. Helped Shirin a bit with her French. Helped student AD set up a new netbook. Supp app project work in Drupal. Snack: 2 veggie spring rolls from Panda Express. My fortune: Good news will come to you from far away. Grocery shopping at Safeway on Taraval. Dinner at home: stir-fry with bean sprouts, shredded carrot, tofu. Edited and uploaded Asia trip photos to Flickr. Watched part of Harry Connick, Jr. Only You on Netflix DVD again. Edited my bookmarks page. Troubleshot "Type your password to allow Adobe Acrobat Pro to make changes" appears whenever launching. Uninstalling 9.4.2 and reinstalling 9.3.0 resolves the problem.

Wed Feb 16, 2011

Weight training: yes no maybes. Breakfast: yogurt with toffee nut granola, 2 small organic green apples, cinnamon, red currant preserves. Rode the bus to work. Lots of scheduling for web redesign exploration meetings. Linkchecking. Lunch #1: butter leaf lettuce salad with grated carrots, homemade sour cream dressing, grated parmesan. Followup with Sarah M about PGP installation, getting ready to do the Mac Pro at work and the iMac at home. A summary of Sarah's answers to my questions: (1) it's safe to encrypt a Time Machine drive, (2) you must explicitly encrypt external drives—it will not ask you and will not encrypt them by default, (3) the latest version of PGP—PGP Desktop 10.1.1 is compatible with OS 10.6.6. More calendar management and scheduling. So recently Joel told me about a need he has. There's an applicant who submitted medical verification from a doctor to say that she could not participate in our writing essay exercise with pen and paper as we normally administer it. (We have not yet made this process electronic.) So Joel needed a way for us to administer the essay portion of our interview process on a computer with certain restrictions. No spell check or grammar check. Must be able to get a word count or character count. No access to Internet. No other aids. My solution: I created a new account in OS X. I logged in as that account user. I removed all icons from the Dock and set the TextEdit icon to remain in the Dock. I created a new TextEdit document called "my essay" and left it on the desktop. I implemented mprussell's solution "Simple word and character count for TextEdit" then logged out and logged back in as admin. (Or you could use Fast User Switching, too.) As admin, I implemented Mark Nanut's solution "Disable spell check in Mac OSX system-wide." I installed gweston's DenyThumbDrives, then configured it with a very large number to reject essentially any USB drive. In System Preferences, I turned off Airport wireless and Bluetooth. I turned on Parental Controls for the new account, permitting only TextEdit to run and removing all websites from the permitted websites list. Here you could use Simple Finder if you wanted, but I did not feel it was necessary. I tested the whole setup from start to finish—it works. I repeated the configuration on our 2nd shared office laptop just to have a backup. Notified student AB about a problem with that student's email settings on Blackberry. Lunch #2: leftover stir-fry. Followup with Lisa about Adobe serial numbers. Followup with Rodney about IRC maintenance. Snack: one orange, one organic minneola. Rode the bus home. Dinner at home: 2 "turkey" sandwiches, one with miso mayo, onions, Tillamook sharp cheddar, iceberg lettuce; the other with artichoke antipesto, onions, Tillamook sharp cheddar, iceberg lettuce. Drink: Dirty Girl Scout. Watched Harry Connick, Jr. Only You on Netflix DVD again. This is such a great performance. My favorite number is "Sweet Georgia Brown" which he plays quite sloppily but it's still so good. The lighting is artful and pleasing. The camera superzooms are a bit not to my liking but otherwise this is great entertainment. Prepared rainbow orzo salad then ate a small bowl of it.

Thu Feb 17, 2011

Weight training: supermans. Breakfast at home: yogurt with toffee nut granola, one fresh, diced organic red apple, cinnamon. WCWG lunch meeting (turkey and provolne sandwich, doritos). IRC meeting with Michael W, Cindy, and Rodney. Tested the special laptop essay setup with Joel. Posted updated draft schedules for Lucia. Reported a listserv problem to ITS: I'm not receiving some confirmation requests. Lunch #2: leftover orzo salad. Rode the bus home. Drink: rolotini but in a DOF. (I have no martini glasses.) Twitter stopped autoposting to Facebook after February 6 and I don't know why. I reenabled it in Facebook by searching for the Twitter app and following the instructions to connect. I had to turn off Facebook https to do so, but afterwards I turned it back on. I hope it still works.

Fri Feb 18, 2011

Breakfast at home: yogurt with toffee nut granola, cinnamon; 8 ounces of orange juice from frozen. Rode the bus to work. Management activities. Followup with student AK about 4-MB attachment filesize limits with our listserv system. Calendar management. IRC project followup with Michael and Rodney: monitor selection. Troubleshot a problem that Robin C reported regarding the use of gradient backgrounds on our website. Turns out she is the 2nd person to report this problem. The first was when our site first launched last year. At that time I was unable to reproduce the problem, and the person who reported it was not part of UCSF, so I did not feel comfortable asking her to help me test solutions. After trading several messages with Robin and trying out a few solutions, I think we might have a solution. It is partially in place and we'll sit with this until next week. Notified students that the student organization websites that were down since the February 3 launch of the new www.ucsf.edu are now back up. Installed InDesign CS5 for Lisa. Could not do the same for Lucia or Cindy because we didn't yet set me up to get past PGP. Dinner at home with Will: tortilla chips with hummus; leftover rainbow orzo salad; butter leaf lettuce salad with sliced grape tomatoes, grated parmesan cheese, homemade sour cream dressing. Watched The Fountain on Netflix instant watch with Will.

Sat Feb 19, 2011

Will and I spent a lazy morning together. Dropped Will off at the the gym in Deliverator. Drove to Oakland. Dropped off my bike at Bay Area Bikes for a free tune-up and a new kickstand. The kickstand provided by Dahon on my Curve SL didn't sit correctly; the bike would too easily fall over. Bought drinks and cookie dough at Oakland Grocery Outlet. Bakesale Betty's fried chicken sandwiches with cole slaw, chocolate chip and pecan cookies at Charmmie and Ryan's with Charmmie, Ryan, Sammie, Mike, Niraj, Attila, ?, Bailey. We talked about the forthcoming Comic-Con in San Diego, dog and cat psychology and behavior, bicycling, food, black metal (?), Janet Jackson, Metallica's website, New York City, India, Dubai, Muni. I met a user experience designer, a 4x5 photographer, the executive assistant to the creator of a wildly popular comic book character (who revealed that a film is optioned and forthcoming), Sammie's fiance, as well as 2 cats and a dog. This was the first time I can remember being in a household with cats and not feeling any allergy symptoms afterwards, so I guess I'm not allergic to all cats. Picked up my bike—the new kickstand (about $10) seems to be an improvement over the previous one. Shopped at Bay Street Emeryville: Apple Store, Gap Kids, Williams-Sonoma, Bath and Body Works, Gymboree, Pottery Barn, Nike. Snack at Pizza My Heart: mushroom pizza slice, Honest Tea organic honey green tea. Cookie from Teacake Bake Shop: orange da vinci: vanilla, orange rind, chocolate chips, toasted almonds. It's slightly crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, just like the woman behind the counter said it would be. Delicious! Stopped at Office Depot—disappointed with the selection of paper trays. Drove home. The Bay Street Emeryville shopping center is charming and brand new, but the parking garage frustrated me because the elevator was really slow and there were no stairs obvious and nearby where you wait for the elevator. (I found stairs eventually but they were far away.) Also, leaving this shopping center is frustrating because it's not very clear how to get to the freeway I wanted to go to. There are too many lanes, too many curves or turns in the path to the freeway, and not enough signs. I think that poor or missing signage caused me to do some quick lane-changing which was challenging at night and in the rain. I would not be surprised if accidents are common in this area. Dinner at home: leftover rainbow orzo salad, a modified rolotini. This time I did 3 parts vodka, 1 part creme de cacao, 1 part butterscotch schnapps and left the ice in the glass. It's better than before, but still not perfect. Entered more journal entries from my Asia trip, but realized that some of my journal notes are mixed up and that I will need to finish going through my photos to figure out the error. Reread the prologue from Patrick's draft of a new novel and sent Patrick new edits for it. Reread and edited part of chapter 1 as well. To bed late.

Sun Feb 20, 2011

House chores: laundry, changed light bulbs, vacuumed. Breakfast: one orange; organic oatmeal with fresh, diced organic red apple with cinnamon, California sage honey, and nonfat milk. Lunch: leftover veggie stir-fry with brown rice. Nap. Snack: "turkey" sandwich with a half-slice of Tillamook sharp cheddar, iceberg lettuce, miso mayo; 2 small beets. Finished folding laundry. Reread and edited part of chapter 2 from Patrick's draft of a new novel. Late meal: Annie's shells and white cheese with onions, garlic, Dorot cilantro. To bed late.

Mon Feb 21, 2011

Weight training: yes no maybes, v-ups (too hard for me—I can't coordinate both actions at the same time properly yet), iron crosses, door pull-ups. Breakfast: organic oatmeal with fresh diced apple, cinnamon, nonfat milk. Sewing projects: edited a pair of beige long pants from Uniqlo. It took pretty much all day because I had to edit the length as well as the width, but I'm very happy with the results. Lunch: leftover rainbow orzo pasta salad, organic honey green tea. Dinner with Will at Catch (415-431-5000, 2362 Market Street, San Francisco, California, USA 94114) via Groupon and OpenTable. We got a coveted table by the fire. Will had a glass of gewurztraminer ($7). Appetizer: tempura shrimp with salmon sushi roll ($14.50). We both had the polenta ($15 each). SF healthcare surcharge ($1.50 each). $54.50 before tax, $40 Groupon discount (purchased for $20), and tip ($12). $31.68. Food was very good. The sushi roll is tasty but it's so big that it easily falls apart and is otherwise not noteworthy. I think it's trying to do too much. A wider dipping dish for the sauce would improve the situation. Service was a little slow but we didn't care. Cathleen was our server. Usually Will dislikes salmon but in this roll he seemed to enjoy it. We abandon earlier plans to go to 80s night at Trigger. Will stays over. We watch part of a Netflix DVD of Strong Bad's emails which is funnier than I had expected it to be. Edited and uploaded Asia trip photos to Flickr.

Tue Feb 22, 2011

Watched videos on YouTube including literal music videos which Will had never seen.

We watched the remainder of Strong Bad's E-mails on Netflix DVD then watched the first 60 minutes of Foxy Brown on Netflix instant watch. To bed around 10:30 PM.

Thu Feb 24, 2011

I used Alfred once today and it was helpful. I don't understand why people think launchers in OS X are so useful. Spotlight is useful when it works, but I don't spend all my time launching and closing applications. Rode the bus to work. Meeting prep. Supp app project meeting. Answered a listserv question for student KT. Followup with Chris W with his Django installation. IRC upgrades project meeting. Lunch #1: leftover sweet potato curry. Made small edits to the grads placement interviews PDF form for Lisa. Reviewed some additional Drupal companies. Linkcheck work. Supp app project work in Drupal. Updated grad licensing checklist PDF for Cindy. Rode the bus home. Dinner at home with Will: burritos similar to the other night.

Mon Feb 28, 2011

Rode the bus to work. My favorite breakfast at the cafeteria. Notified University Relations that our student org websites are down again. Followup with Rodney about a MacBook Pro. Purchasing paperwork. Listserv management. Followup regarding Voigt Lab website being down—this was resolved sometime last week. IRC upgrades project followup. Lunch #1: leftover veggie pad thai. Completed my review of additional Drupal companies, sent it to Susie and Eric for review. Lunch #2: leftover sweet potato curry. Prepared a list of recommended hardware for David, who starts tomorrow. Joel bought Girl Scout cookies for the office—yum! Calendar management. Submitted a request for David's email account. Prepped edits for Lucia and Cindy regarding the health services reimbursement page. After work, I hopped on the N and received a message from Will—his car battery died at work. I met him at 24 Hour Fitness and summoned AAA via the Roadside iPhone app. Within about an hour, the battery was replaced for about $100. We continued on our original plan: shopping at The Container Store. I bought some paper trays. We ate at Sorabol in Westfield Center just before everything closed.
